http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/norton/Lockard/254.htm . " William H. grew up a farmer lad, was educated in public schools and went to school at Tabor college, Iowa. He came to Norton county with his parents in 1879 and in 1880 homesteaded a claim in Harrison, then a part of Aldine township. He commenced teaching school when 17 years old; taught in Iowa, Missouri and Kansas. He taught the first school ever held in Aldine township during winter of 1879-80. He returned to Clarinda, Iowa, in the fall of 1880, taught school and read law in the office of J. R. Good. Returned to Norton in July, 1889; he was principal of the Norton schools in 1884-85, and read law with Judge Louis K. Pratt; he was appointed postmaster in September, 1885; published the Norton Democrat and New Era, from November, 1886 until May, 1891. He was admitted to Norton county's bar at the September term of district court 1891, and officed with Judge Pratt one year. William E. was married to Nellie A. Shafer May 19, 1886, who died March 24, 1889. To them were born Grover C., September 10, 1887, who died June 6, 1891, after suffering two years from the effects of swallowing a few drops of concentrated lye, and Nellie, March 14, 1889"
