Authneil is listed in the searchable database at http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.cfm . The microfilm reference is M540 roll 74. On that same roll is an index for a John W. Stitt.

In the 1880 Census for Freemont, Sidney County, Iowa, Authneil is listed as a farmer. James and Viola Farrow are living next door (or on a portion of the farm subdivided perhaps). Viola would be the daughter of Authneil and Hannah McDaniel, I believe.

Information from Leatha Ann Dieckmann places Authneil as Robert Stitt's son. There is a mention of Robert Stitt in an early history of Noblesville, Indiana and he also appears in a census along with Obadiah Stitt. Another source (Steven Kamm posted 2004/10/25 on Ancestry.com) speculates that Authniel may have been the son of Elijah Stitt of Morgan County. (Elijah is in the 1840 Census of Morgan County Indiana). The McDaniel name is also found in Morgan County in the 1840's.
