(II) John (2) Spencer, son of John (1) and Susanna (Griffin) Spencer,
was born April 20, 1666, and died in 1743. He was a cordwainer by trade.
Removing to East Greenwich with his father in 1677, he spent the
remainder of his life there, and was an influential figure in public
affairs for many years. In 1699-1700-04-05-09-14-24-26-29 he represented
the town in the General Assembly. In 1704 he was justice of the peace.
In 1712-19 he was speaker of the House of Deputies. About 1692, John
Spencer married Audrey Greene, who was born December 27, 1667, and
died April 17, 1733, daughter of John and Ann (Almy) Greene, and
granddaughter of Surgeon John Greene, of Warwick. John Greene, her
father, was major of militia, and Deputy Governor of the Colony.
From a note in the Spencer file at the North Kingstown Free Library:

His will was made July 2, 1733. Proved December 31, 1743 -- mentions
To son John, Lott 222 Tannery utensils, etc." ... "son William farm in East
Greenwich" ... "to grandson John of William, Lott 132 East Greenwhich." ... "to grandson
John of John Lott 137 East Greenwhich" .. "to granddaughter Audrey Spencer of John
house lot #10", "to granddauther Audrey Spencer of William, house lot #9".
To sons John and William the rest of personal estate equally.
Another note in the Spencer file entitled "Spencer Family Notes, A.M.M.L. 1937" goes on to say "his son, John who married Audrey Greene being heir at law inherited all of his father's real property. in 1696-1700 he gave to his brothers Michael, William, Benjamin, an Abner portions of his inheritance. (There was also a brother Robert b. 1674 . 1748 who married Theodosia Waite by aughter of Theophilus Whaley. ... "his will, ated July 2, 1733 proved December 31, 1743 mentions the following legacies. to son John, homestead farm, Lott 222 Tannery Utensils ...

In the "Narragansett Historical Register" vol. 5, pp. 157, John Spencer is listed as the justice of the peace having married Mary Jenkins (b. 5-Jan-1689) to Henry Reynolds Jr. of East Greenwhich. The ceremony was 9 March 1710.
In ("In Laws", Box 5, Folder 12, Violet E Kettelle Genelaogical Collection CS69.K48 2002, April 2002): Violet Kettelle writes "John-2 Spencer in 1684 chose as guardians Richard Dunn and Thomas Nichols of Newport. How related? What relationship to John-1 Spencer and John-2 Spencer?

- Thomas Nichols is one of the prominent figures in West Greenwich history along with John Spencer (b. 1666 d. 1743). "John Spencer’s father was a proprieter of East Greenwich and a deputy in the General Assembly. He died in 1743 leaving a large posterity.” (p 25)
- West Greenwich was set aside April 6, 1741 from East Greenwich as per the request of residents. The measure passed unanimously. "Proceedings of the General Assembly held for the colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations at Providence the first Wednesday of April 1741. ... And it be further enacted by the authority that aforesaid John Spencer, Esq., a justice of the peace living within the aforesaid new town remain in his office til the first Wednesday in May next; and that he grant forth a warrant to call in the inhabitants of the said town together on the third Tuesday on this instant April to elect such town officers as they shall have occasion for... Voted and resolved that John Spencer, Esq. and Mr. John Greene be committeemen for the town of West Greenwich to let out their proportionate part of the bank money."
- In July 1741 the interest money in the general fund was divided between East and West Greenwich and supervisors of the division were John Spencer, John Greene, and Benjamin Sweet.
- Population of the town was less than 760 inhabitants but grew to 2,000 by 1790.
