In "Spencer Family notes", A.M.M.L. 1937 -- posted in the Spencer file at the North Kingstown Free Library, references are to Austins general Dictionary of Rode Island (p. 186) and also "Our new England Ancestors" -- "Spencer and Allied Families by Henry Whittemore.

Ancestors and Descendants," The American Genealogist, 27 (April 1951), pp.
79-87. This article is where I get the names of Michael's children. From here it seems relatively certain to other researchers that John was indeed Michael's son. Unfortunately the least is known about Michael (among the 4 immigrant brothers).
