Additional Information

William SPENCER:

Notes:
In 1703 William Spencer contributed 3 shillings to the building of a meeting house for Quakers at Mashapaug.

27 May 1709 he and 12 others bought 1824 acres of vacant land in Narragansett, near Devil's Foot.

He was deputy in 1714, 24, 26, 27, 29, 34-5. He was justice of interior court of common pleas for Kings County. Estate partially appraised by Thomas (Spencer?). 10 children were born in North Kingstown.

(III) William Spencer, son of John (2) and Audrey (Greene) Spencer, was
born at East Greenwich, R. I., May 6, 1695, and was a prominent resident
and large land owner there all his life. He married, May 10, 1716,
Elizabeth Rice, daughter of John and Elnathan (Whipple) Rice, and died
in 1776.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The North Kingstown Free Library has a file on the Spencer family. The author lists
the Children of William and Elizabeth but doens't mention a Henry. There is a Henry listed
as the child of Benjamin and Martha Spencer, William's brother -- the birth date for him
is October 19, 1704. Other children listed in the note are John, Richard, Alice, William,
Ellen, Elizabeth, Job, Nathan, Samuel, and Benjamin. There is definitely a discrepancy between
this note and my other information. I think the person who submitted the note did so in about
1936.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In The Narragansett Historical Register, vol. 2, pp. 268 there is mention of William Spencer serving in North Kingstown as Justice on January 4, 1725.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From "Representative Men and old Families of Rhode Island" vol. 3, p. 1570 -- William Spencer removed to North Kingstown. Of John an Susannah's children, only William and his brother Robert relocated to North Kingstown. Robert later relocated to Exeter. This helps to establish William Spencer of North Kingstown as the son of John Spencer, founder of E. Greenwhich. "Like their father seemingly, nearly all had a taste of public life and served their town in some public capacity, some prominently, all of the ons at one time or another representing their community in the Colonial Assembly; and Dr. Thomas Spencer, a physician of East Greenwhich, was for some years clerk of the Assembly, for some twenty and more years a deputy to the General Court, was one of the justices of the Superior Court of Common Pleas for the county of Providence and at one time Speaker of the House of Deputies."

From the Rhode Island Genealogical Register, page 196, "North Kingstown land Evidence".

Signed: William Spencer, William Hall, Joseph Havens, …

- This establishes that a William Spencer owned land in North Kingstown in 1717.

Also from the book on page 179:

Pg. 200-301 (page 179 in book under “North Kingstown Land Evidence”). - This establishes the wife of William Spencer as “Elizabeth”. It also again demonstrates land ownership in North Kingstown in 1709. The document is burned – I had heard there was a fire which destroyed many of the North Kingstown documents.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was William who moved to North Kingstown. His son Henry was admitted as a Freeman on March 1736/7 (all born before 17/6).

From Tim Fredrick
- so son John was from Dutchess County New York -- could this help connect grandson Christopher to this Spencer family?
