"Neal" was tall, approx. 6'4" and lean. Dark hair, grey eyes. Avid hunter. loved to travel. musically inclined (played fiddle in a band). He liked to "tinker" around and fix things, and photographer (took many early day photos of Indians).

Additional Notes by Hazel Spencer Tomlinson:

In the spring of 1893 my parents, Cornealius and Leola Stinson Spencer, and my grandparents, Allen and Ann Godwin Stinson, left Iowa with their children to find a new home in Oklahoma. The government was giving away claims to be homesteaded upon. Each family was given a quarter (160 acres) which had to be improved. They were required to fence the land, build a building, and live on the land one year before it became theirs.

Each family brought two covered wagons. My mother with two small children, four-year-old Oren and two-year-old Edith, drove by oxen all the way. There were no bits or lines to guide the oxen which pulled the wagon with a yoke. Mother could handle the oxen by calling out "Gee" and "Haw" and telling the oxen to go far right or left and by yelling "Whoa" to stop.

There were no laid-out roads in Oklahoma, so they made their way across the prairie.

In the western part of Blaine County, called Indian Territory, my dad and grandfather filed on places across the road from each other. [...] each by u spring in order that they could have water until they could dig wells. My father dug a dugout close to his spring where a ne [...] daughter (Elsie Jane) was born June 12, 1893. They lived in the dugout until my dad could build a house. To buy the necessary rhing [...] on, my father cut posts and hauled them to El Reno.

There were no towns close, therefore, if my father and grandfather had not been excellent hunters, their families would gave gone without many times. Deer, rabbits, and turkeys were plentiful. My mother was also an excellent shot. If my father was gone and we were getting low on meat, mother would go out and kill a wild turkey, rabbit, or squirrel.
