Additional Information

Christopher SPENCER:
Name: Christopher SPENCER
Name: Christopher SPENCER 4
Born: 1790, Rhode Island 5
Born: 1790, Rhode Island 6

Notes:
Previously I had the first wife of Christopher Spencer as "Hannah NORTHUP" (b. 31-Oct-1787, RI to Nicholas Carr Northup and Nancy Anne). A closer look showed that this isn't the right "Hannah Northup" -- fairly well researched Northup genealogy data shows this Hannah Northup as having married "Christopher Spink" instead, and living well into the 19th century.

The orginal assumption came in part from the notes of Violet Kettelle -- she had handwritten a question mark next to Hannah Northup in a family group list indicating she had some questions about this marriage as well.

Really, I have found little to go on except that Christopher was indeed from North Kingstown. That was from a land deed. Others have linked him to William and Mercy Spencer. I haven't found anything like a death certificate for Christopher Spencer. He seemed to be in his early 20's when he moved to Madison County which makes me wonder if there was a first wife at all.

For now, I am removing the 1st wife connection to Hannah Northup but note here that Violet Ketelle and others have recorded a 1st wife.

--------------------------------
In 1826 he might have owned cattle in Cazenovia, NY...

see http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyccazen/MscLists/Creatures.html

There is also a reference to road districts at:

http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyccazen/Documents/RoadBook/Districts1822.html . In
some of these documents (1820 and 1822), Christopher Spencer is listed as "overseer of the highway".

Cazenovia was being settled for the first time in the 1790s (see
http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyccazen/Documents/RoadBook/) .

2 stones were removed to clear a field where Christopher and Anna were buried.
The reference is:
http://moneycentral.groups.msn.com/MadisonCountyCemeteriesNewYorkStateandIngallsFamily/spencercemetery.msnw

-------------------------------------------------

In http://www.rootsweb.com/~nymadiso/1899-4.htm
talks about some Rhode Island roots. Capt. Daniel Brown, a Quaker from Stonington, CT brought early settlers to Cazenovia from CT and RI in the Spring of 1791. I couldn't find Spencers in the town from before 1829, however, when Christopher is listed as a resident. It seems that he might have moved from RI to Madison county not too many years before Allen was born in 1826.

---------------------------------------------------

In the 1855 Census at
http://www.rootsweb.com/%7Enyccazen/Census/Cazenovia/1855Cazenovia.html#S
Christopher Spencer is listed:

Spencer, Christopher, (Spencer, Christopher), District #3, Dwelling #125, Family #136, Page 119, Line 6, Frame Dwelling Valued at $50, Age 64, Resident 25 Years, 7 in Household, Occupied as Farmer.

We know that he purchased land in 1813, but the "25 years" would indicate he lived at the
present house since about 1830. The "7" in the household probably included:

Christopher Spencer, Age 64
Anna Rice-Spencer, Age 52
(Anna) Armilla Spencer, Age 21
Christopher Columbus Spencer, Age 19
Catherine Savilla Spencer, Age 15
John Spencer, Age 13
William Zachariah Spencer, Age 6

who also appear on the 1850 census.

This would seem to indicate he moved into Cazenovia in 1830 at the age of 39. So the kids
who would have been born in Cazenovia would be William, Anna Armilla, Christopher Columbus,
Savilla, Catherine, John and William Zachariah.

-----------------------------------------------------

In 1983 Hazel Tomlinson wrote "The Fay, Oklahoma Spencers have been traced back to England to the 1700's to Henry Spencer, whom we know very little about. We don't know the name of Henry's wife, just that he had two sons, William and Christopher. Henry's birthdate of 1716 given in the research available is also questionable. If Henry was born in 1716,, that would have made him 74 when Christopher was born. It has been established that the Fay Spencer line is through Christopher Spencer.

She gives Christopher's birthdate as June 16, 1790 and his marriage date as March 13, 1818.

She gives the birthdate of Ann Rice" as June 22, 1803.

---------------------------------------------------------
What links Christopher Spencer to father William and grandfather Henry of North Kingstown is the book "Huling Genealogy" by Esther Littleford Woodworth-Barnes. In the introduction she stated her work was reviewed by several Genealogists one of whom is an expert on the Spencers of East Greenwhich.

In the book, though, the author doesn't know the Anna's maiden name. She lists seven children. So far, I've had a hard time proving that Allen Spencer is Christopher Spencer's son.

---------------------------------------------------------

In "("Vital Records" Violet E. Kettelle Genealogical Collection, Box 5, Folder 15)", Violet Kettelle give sus the marriage of Christopher to Hannah Northrup on page 45 "Marriages to 1850 North Kingstown"):

11-22-1809 Christopher(5) of Wm(4), Henry(3), Wm(2), John(1) and Hannah Northrup of ...

Later Violet Kettelle references the 1850 census "Cezenovia, NY -- Chris. Spencer b. 1790, R.I."

- Tim Fredrick's note: Violet Ketelle establishes a strong connection between Christopher Spencer of Cazenovia to the Rhode Island Spencers of North Kingstown through this description of land sales. We would find that in the North Kingstown Land Evidence, around 1842.

- Violette Ketelle writes

F. Christopher(5) Spencer of William(4) b. 5-9-1795 (corrected to 1792 and notes "age in Census makes it 1792). died before 2-1-1872, Cazenovia, NY.

Mrs. Clark gave opposite Christopher these names:

Later Violet Kettelle enumerates the various Christopher Spencers

I. William(2) -> Christopher (b. 1710). Sons were John(4), William(5), Nicholas, and George
2. William(2) -> Thomas(3) (b. 1712) -- sons were Wm(4) and Christopher(5) (b. 1783)

9. Christopher Spencer (1800-1867) of. m. Anna
10. Christopher Spencer in 1782 East Greenwich Census, son of Lydia (wid.), sons Nicholas and WIlliam

On the next page she lists the Spencer Family of Cazenovia from the 1855 NY census:
- Christopher Spencer 64, b. R.I. lvd. 25 yrs
- Anna 52 b. Mont. County
- Armilla 21 b. Madison County
- Columbus 19 b. Madison County
- Savilla 16 b. Madison County
- John 12 b. Madison County
- Zachary 6 b. Madison County

"The Christopher I have in Madison Co., does not agree in age with William's son b. May 9, 1795. What I have is as follows:
- Town of Cazenovia 3rd Election Dist. June 14, 1855
- Christopher Spencer 64, b. R.I. lvd. 25 yrs
- Anna 52 b. Mont. County (2nd Wife?)
- Armilla 21 b. Madison County
- Columbus 19 b. Madison County
- Savilla 16 b. Madison County
- John 12 b. Madison County
- Zachary 6 b. Madison County

Probate Record 124--293. Feb. 1, 1872, Zachariah Spencer, Spirit Lake, Dixon County, Iowa. John Spencer and Lucy F. Spencer, wife of same place. Allen Spencer and Lydia M. Spencer wife, of Jefferson, Iowa; Lydia Moulton, wife Peter town of Wittington, Monroe County, Wis., heirs of Christopher Spencer.

I see I have mention of Christopher Spencer & Margaret Sp. in Town of Salisbury, Herkimer County in 1803. One in town of Caton, Steuben Co. b. ca 1769-70, will dated Feb. 17, 1849 ae about 79. Pet. dated July 20, 1850. 3 daus. Delila, Dorcas & Salina b. Dover, Dutchess Co., NY mar. Benj. Marcy, sounds like R.I. Also one in Genesee Co., NY, d. Oct 14, 1886 evidently elderly all grdchildren were married. The wife of one dec'd son d. Feb 13, 1855 ae 29 yrs.

Tim Fredrick: In the above Violet Kettelle names Allen Spencer as an heir of Christopher alongside Zachariah and John. I don't suppose this is quite proof that Allen in Christopher's son, but it gives us a very close relationship.

Further, Violet Kettelle has a note "Land records 124-293. Feb. 1, 1872. Zachariah Spencer, Spirit Lake, Dixon Co., Iowa; John Spencer and Lucy F. Spencer, his wife of the same place; Alen Spencer & Lydia M. Spencer his wife of Jefferson, Iowa; Lydia Moulton, wife of Peter of Town of Wittington, Monroe County, Wisconsin, heirs of Christopher Spencer.

Anna RICE:

Notes:
http://www.morrisonspensions.org/rice.html lists a pension application by Catharine Rice for the pension of her husband John Rice who was in the Revolutionary War. Roger Tomlinson pointed me to this resource which seems like a strong clue that Catharine and John Rice are Anna's parents. One of the daughter's of Catharine Rice is named "Anna, married to ____ Spencer". One of Anna's children is named Catherine. And when John Rice died, he was visiting a daughter in "Chittenango" -- perhaps referring not to the town of Chittenango but to the Chittenango Falls region where Anne and Christopher's farm existed in 1826.

(04) William SPENCER:

Notes:
For Death I found this on the web:

http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/NYMADISO/2000-08/0966749626

"Spencer, William son of Christopher Spencer of Cazenovia d. at
Lindenwood, Ogden Co., IL 21 Oct 1846 ae abt. 17 yrs.
Madison County WHig 23 Dec 1846"

Could William Spencer have been travelling west with his older brother Allen? The 1850 census for Walworth County Wisconsin lists an Allen Spencer -- this would be across the border from Ogle County Illinois but not really all that far.

(06) Christopher Columbus SPENCER:
Name: Christopher C SPENCER 13
Name: C Columbus SPENCER 14
Name: Christopher C SPENCER 15
Born: 1836, New York 16
Born: 1836, New York 17

Notes:
I have a web page on Christopher Columbus Spencer at http://www.tefredrick.com/genealogy/spencer/links/

http://library.morrisville.edu/local_history/sites/114th/muster_k.html shows Christopher Spencer as having been killed in action on September 19, 1864.

http://library.morrisville.edu/local_history/sites/mad_bury/master2.html#sm shows Christopher Spencer as having been buried in Winchester (I'm supposing in the unmarked graves at the National Cemetary.

He enlisted 11 August 1862 as a private at the age of 26 years old.

The Civil War Soldiers and Sailors system is a searchable database at
http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.cfm that also comes up with Christopher's name -- from an index card filmed and available from the NARA on Microfilm M551 roll 123.
