Additional Information

Allen SPENCER:
Born: 1826, New York 5
Born: 1826, New York 6
Born: 1826, New York 7
Born: 1867, Iowa 8

Notes:
I found Allen Spencer listed in the 1870 Census as living on his farm in
Poweshick County, Iowa. He and Lydia were both born in New York according to
the census (page 20), Jefferson Township, Poweshick County, Iowa, June 25, 1870.

He had lived in Wisconsin (Ladysmith?) since William and Luther were born there. Matilda was
born in New York and so was Ida.

The kids listed on this Census include Ida, William (my Great Great Grandfather), Luther,
Matilda, Teresa (Teressa?), Allen Jr., Cornelia (F), and a farm laborer who they also brought
from New York named Zacharich (?).

Ida the oldest was born in New York. William the 2nd oldest (13) was born in Wisconsin. But
Luther (11) was also born in Wisconsin. But Matilda (8) was born in New York. The other
kids were all born in Iowa.

This indicates to me that they moved west from New York to Wisconsin. Then they returned
to New York where Matilda was born. Then they moved west again to Iowa. It seems they
lived in Wisconsin for 4-6 years, in New York the 2nd time for 1-6 years, and finally
settled in Iowa (Jefferson township).

--------------------
Information from Roger Tomlinson places the death date at 18 Jan 1883

---------------------

To tell you the truth, I have not yet found definitive evidence that Christopher is Allen's father. This
relationship is mentioned in records from Luther Spencer and picked up by my great uncle William
M. Spencer. We think Allen was married in the 1850's in Madison County New York (Canastota
is the township which includes Wampsville, the county seat). And in Wampsville, I found land
ownership records for Allen next to the Christopher Spencer farm north of Cazenovia. But I could never
find a census record in Madison county for Allen.

If the name "Quackenbush" is really a part of Lydia's name or her family's name, then Saratoga
county seems like a likely point of origin. Descendents of the Quakenbush immigrants
more or less settled in the Albany area. There is mention of an "Allen Spencer" in Hoosick, NY,
who was a trustee of the First Baptist Church of Hoosick Falls (see
http://www.hoosickhistory.com/shortstories/HistoryOfHoosick.htm ). Hoosick is located in Washington
County, northeast of Albany near the Vermont border.

Another interesting Allen Spencer reference is in the 1850 Census for Walworth County, Wisconsin
just across the border from Illinois near Chicago. This Allen Spencer would also have been born
in 1826, and was also from New York. Housemates and neighbors includes Arnolds and Butts who
were also nearby residents in Madison County, New York near Christopher Spencer's farm.

Lydia Matilda QUACKENBUSH:
Name: Lydia SPENCER 9
Name: Lydia SPENCER 10
Name: Lydia M SPENCER 11
Name: Lydia M. SPENCER 12
Born: 1830, New York 13
Born: 1830, New York 14
Born: 1831, New York 15
Born: 1831, NY 16

Notes:
Lydia is 54 in the 1885 Iowa state census placing her birth in 1830 or 1831. At that time, Allen had just died, and she was living with her sons, Luther (who was 25 years old), Allen (who was 17), and Cornealius (who was 15). This is the census which places the birth of Allen and Cornelius as Keokuk, IA. She was also listed as living with her foster children (Ida's children), Elmer (age 11) and Alfred (age 9) Brown. According to Carol Walker, a family story has that an uncle and aunt raised Elmer and Alfred Brown (we also know him as Andrew Alfred Brown). Could Luther and Ellen have been that uncle and aunt?

Lydia is listed as living with Luther and his wife Ellen in Oklahoma as of the
1900 census. She is 69 at this time. This verifies the date of birth as July 1830. Again
her parents are listed as from New York.

==============================================================

Allen Spencer's death certificate has his wife's maiden name listed as Quackenbush. And I've seen it as Quackenbush on other sources as well. But it's listed as Potts on the marriage record of her son "Allen J. Spencer". Her origins before marrying Allen are pretty much a mystery. I tried to locate a marriage record for her at the courthouse in Wampsville, New York, but their records don't go back that far.

==============================================================
From my Great Uncle Bill's notes:

"Great Grandma Lydia never married again after Allen died. She went to Oklahoma
with her two sons, my great Uncle Neal, and Luther, and she lived with them
until she died. It always seemed to me that the most typical scenario was
maiden name Quackenbush, then something -- death perhaps broke that up
and she married Great Grandfather Allen. Great Uncle Luther received from my mother
an exact copy of what I call the "Black Book" around 1920 in which my mother called her
Lydia "Kwackenbush". I think that my mother put this together from information my father
scraped together from Great Uncles Neal and Luther and great Aunt Tessie. Mildred Knoop,
Great Uncle Luther's granddaughter, with whom I am in contact, told me that when Luther
received it, he crossed out Quackenbush and wrote in Potts. But Mildred doesn't know
any more about it than we do.

When I went on an info gathering tour to Monroe County where great Uncle Luther was born,
I found there were Quackenbush's in considerable numbers living in that same area." [Tim Fredrick: This would be Monroe County, Wisconsin]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lydia is buried in Liberty Cemetery, Fay, Custer County, Oklahoma on land that Cornealius Spencer owned.

(06) Allen SPENCER:

Notes:
We believe that the first "Allen" was born 10-March-1852 and died 05-Sep-1853 only a few months old. The second Allen Spencer was born 30-March-1867 and died in 1921.

Marriage Notes
This is one of the family mysteries. We don't know exactly when or where Allen and Lydia
were married. Lydia is also listed in family history as "Quackenbush" but in all of the records I could find, she is listed as "Potts"
