Discharged at Camp Dodge, Iowa, on April 14, 1919, as a Corporal.

Worked as a highway engineer for most of his life (42 years). He was baptised as an adult and joined the Lutheran Church before he and Mina were married. He lived in Boulder -- and lived at Fairview Estates, just east of 76th Street between Baseline and South Boulder Road.

From Great Great Aunt Bertha Schumacher-Hallgren: "John Spare enlisted in the North Dakota National Guard -- Company B at age 17 and was assigned to the Rio Grande River Patrol on the Mexican border, at Mercedes, Texas. One day he was patrolling near the bridge by the encampment when suddenly a herd of horses was seen coming at full speed toward the bridge with Pancho Villa and his robber band behind them -- exchanging gunfire with men from empty guns because as yet there was not enough equipment so ammunition could be issued for everyone. There was only one thing to do -- and the 'boys' did it. They dived under the bridge as one man -- THEY ALL HAD UNLOADED GUNS!!"

Notes:
According to my Grandmother, Mina Spare also lived in Boulder, CO (in addition to Elsa and Bertha). Their daughter Paula (aka Pauline) lived in Denver and married an attorney named Johnson. They in-turn had 2 children.

According to my Great Great Aunt Bertha Schumacher-Hallgren, she had her name legally changed from her baptised name "Minna Albertine" to "Mina Albertine". She suffered rheumatoid arthritis since her middle 20's and died 9/30/1970.

Mina was with Standard Oil after WWI ended. She had left home to go to college at 16.

John and Mina's marriage is listed at http://dp3.lib.ndsu.nodak.edu/marriage/search.cgi (license 08194, January 8, 1921, Cass County)
