Notes:
Carl Schumacher is listed on the 1900 Census for Bellchester, MN as a farmer.

In the fall of 1917, Carl moved his family to Fargo, ND.

In 1881 he may have been a border at a place in London. He got his citizenship in 1884. According to my great Uncle, he came to America May 6, 1884. and settled at Mazeppa MN where he had cousins. My Great Uncle was aware of a younger sister, a brother Christian depicted in a photo with the caption "Dad's brother Uncle Christian in German Army, about 1870".

In 1900 he and his wife Albertine were living in Wabasha County, Chester, MN on a farm
which they leased. On this census, we get the month and year of birth of Carl and his children, Anna, Albert, Minnie, Fredrick, and Bertha. We also get their immigration year (1884 for Carl and 1883 for Albertine). Carl was 25 years old when he immigrated and Albertine was 23.

In 1903 he and the family moved to Lisbon, North Dakota (according to his passport application).

In 1930 he was living with his daughters Elsa and Berha in Fargo, ND. He was 71 at the
time, his wife, Albertina was 69. Elsa was 26 and Bertha 30.

My Great Uncle William Malrose Spencer has a note naming him "Carl Ludwig Theodor Schumacher" and this is what appears on his baptism certificate (from Germany). However, I have also seen "Carl Lewis".

He lived at 714 12th Street in Fargo ND around the time of WWI (from son Frederick's draft card).

Many of his family were still in Germany during World War I, and many died in the war.

When he immigrated, it took seven years for him to save the $50 which was the fare for passage to America. Carl had an Uncle in Minnesota who encouraged him to come to America. He came 6, May 1884.

The name of his birthplace is a little unclear since I was transcribing old-script German. Using google, the best match I could come up with was Natzmersdorf, kreis Regenwalde. Regenwalde was established in 1809 as part of HinterPommern. At the end of WWII, it was given to Poland. The Germans left the area and many records were lost or destroyed. An interesting site on Regenwalde is http://pommernkontakte.de .

He was short (5-feet, 3-inches), with a somewhat pointed chin and mustache according to his passport application. He had brown hair and a dark complexion. His address in Lisbon in 1909 was Rural Route 5.

Albertine Johanne HENSEL:
Name: Albertina SCHUMACHER 10
Name: Albertine SCHUMACHER 11
Born: 1864, Germany 12

Notes:
My Great Uncle William Malrose Spencer has a note naming her "Henriette Albertine Johanne Hensel Schumacher" born December 11, 1860 in Schönwalde Hinter Pommern, Germany in southern Germany'.

From Great Great Aunt Bertha Schumacher-Hallgren: "Mother's yearnings did not lean toward a new country. She was happy in the southern part of the country and many hours we spent listening to her reminisences. How she came to Minnesota is related under 'Maternal Great Grandparents'. She loved the lake close by their home where she played as a child, and the cherries and sweet blue plums on their fruit trees. Smoked goose was a specialty and this delectable dish she brought to her new home in America, for us too, to enjoy. Later when she found herself in the wilds of early North Dakota, with snow that on occasion reached nearly to the roof of the house, she entertained us with many a tale of her youth, leaving us with a yearning to live in a country such as mamma came from, instead of where there were months of cold weather and snow, veritable clouds of wild ducks in the fall sky, and Indians crossing the country in tented wagons..."

She and Carl met and were married in America -- in southern Minnesota. She went to school with the kids she cared for, and so learned English more effectively than Carl. She was determined to make English the language of their home after the older children were having trouble in school.

There's a detailed map of Schönwalde at http://heuser.pro.br/showmedia.php?mediaID=130. Schönwalde is in kreis Regenwalde where I'm beginning (as of 7/23/08) to think Carl Schumacher was also from. A larger map exists at http://www.posselt-landkarten.de/b07.htm. Today's location in Poland is on Google Maps at http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Jezioro+Zajezierze,+Poland&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=58.816238,103.623047&ie=UTF8&ll=53.587614,15.726929&spn=0.087428,0.202389&z=13 . The old Schönwalde is now known as Zajezierze on highway 148 between Lobez and Drawsko Pomorskie. Of course to make things more confusing, there is another location still called Schönwalde located in today's Germany (but still in Pomerania) at http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Sch%C3%B6nwalde++Pommern&sll=53.579461,15.606079&sspn=2.798455,6.47644&ie=UTF8&ll=53.542424,13.912811&spn=0.02188,0.050597&z=15

(07) Marie SCHUMACHER:

Notes:
This is from my Great Great Aunt Bertha Spencer-Hallgren. "I don't know anything about my sister Marie excepting that she was born in Wabasha County, Minnesota (as we all were) in 1883 and died in 1885 of Colera Morbis -- which was a bowel disease (not Cholera) for which there was nothing one could do in that century. I only remember that mother talked about (our little Mary, she called her always, for it nearly broke her heart) and how she had run into the field when she knew Marie was dyring, to get father so he could see her once more, alive. I saw her baptismal certificate many times when I was small -- for it was in with ours in mother's bedroom - and knew she was named Marie but dates didn't mean anything to me then."
