Born: 1867, Washington, DC 18

Notes:
Popular family history has it that Louis John Bauer moved his family across to Montana while
my grandfather was still young -- settling in Havre and homesteading on land there.
They moved by covered wagon, which for the end the of the 19th century wouldn't have been
unlikely.

The 1910 Census has him living in Havre, Montana in what is known known as "Hill County" but
was then known as "Chateau County". Unfortunately the Census is barely legible. It does list, though
Louis J., his wife Margaret C., and Melvin, Louis, and Beatrice C., the kids. From that census, it
appears as if the parents of Louis John came from Germany (both sides).

On that Same Census is an "Anna Von Wald" living with them -- she is 73 years old placing her
birth year in 1837, so I think she must be the mother of Margaret Von Wald. She may have
moved to Montana with the family when they homesteaded.

Early on, my great grandmother (Louis) and great grandmother (Margaret) divorced. My grandfather had little contact with his dad, Louis John, who eventually remarried. The remarriage may have been to a "Maggie M." listed on the 1920 Census. If this is the same Louis John Bauer, this places his birth in Washington DC and Maggie M. as the second wife. There is a son, Richard E., who is 3 1/2 years old at the time. After the divorce was probably the point during which my Grandfather and his brother ended up in Wyoming.

---------------------------------

On the 1920 Census for Havre Montana, Louis' profession is listed as Locomotive Engineer.

--------------------------------
According to http://www.jinman.org/1917hillcoownership.html, Louis John Bauer homesteaded on land in township 33 (Havre), range 15, section 25.
--------------------------------

In 1910 there was a Thomas Bauer who was married in Havre, Montana. Brother?

---------------------------------
Louis John Bauer appears in the 1885 census, an 18-year old living in St. Paul, Ramsey Coiunty, Minnesota. There is a Caroline Keiper who was his mother. On that census, his parents are listed as "of foreign birth". He is listed as having been born in Washington DC. "Keiper" is is mother's current name -- I can't quite make her husband's name -- August perhaps? I might conclude from this that Keiper is her second name and that she was married previously to a "Bauer" who would have been my great-grandfather's father.

Name: Margreth VONWALD
Born: 1861, Wisconsin, Wisconsin 26
Born: 1863, Wisconsin 27
Born: 1863, Wisconsin 28
Born: 1863, Wisconsin, Wisconsin 29

Notes:
I Found an entry in the 1870 Census for Montana, Buffalo County, Wisconsin. Margreth was
listed along with her siblings Anna (13), Menga (11), John (9), Margreth (7), Andrew (5), and
Sisbeth (3). Her father is listed as "Casper Von Wald" (49) and her Mother as "Anna" (33).

Also at http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/wi/buffalo/land/buff-t-z.txt is an index of land
holdings. "Caspar Von Wald" is listed as owning 40 acroes, signed 1865/05/05 in Section_NR 12,
Township 22N, Range 11W, LaCrosse Land Office, document # 16664.

By the 1920 Census, she was head of household on 3rth Street in Havre, Montana. So at this
point, she must have divorced my Great Grandfather Louis John Bauer. Her children, Melvin,
Louis W. (my Grandfather), and Beatris C. were listed as residents. This Census confirms that
Louis John was born in Washington, DC. Margareth (Margaret)'s parents are listed as from Switzerland, She is from Wisconsin while her kids were born in Minnesota.
